During the Irish Revolutionary period from 1919 to 1923, approximately 275 Irish country houses were burnt down, blown up or otherwise destroyed by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). However, there are a number of stunning castles and manor houses that did survive and many have been converted into luxury hotels that you can actually stay in. There is no better way to enjoy your time in Ireland other than to stay in a luxurious castle or manor house where you can try your hand at a host of Irish outdoor country pursuits. If you are planning a self-drive tour of Ireland, then use my detailed Irish itinerary.
Ashford Castle
Cong, County Mayo, Ireland
Ashford Castle is a medieval castle dating back to 1228. It is the oldest castle in Ireland and fits everyone’s fantasy of a medieval fortress, with soaring turrets, breathtaking views of Lough Corrib and a resident ghost. Once owned by the famous Guinness family, it opened as a hotel in 1939.
Over the years, Ashford Castle has seen its fair share of notable guests, including; King George V and his consort Queen Mary; John Lennon; George Harrison; Oscar Wilde; President Ronald Reagan; Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex; US Senator Ted Kennedy; John Wayne; Brad Pitt; and Prince Rainier III of Monaco and his consort, Princess Grace.
It has also been used as a filming location. In 1951, the film director John Ford came to film The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. The grounds of the castle, as well as nearby Cong, formed the backdrop for much of the action in the film.
In more recent years the castle has been used as a set for “French Court” in The CW television network’s hit medieval drama Reign. The castle and surrounding grounds figure prominently in the first three seasons of the drama, with the cast and crew returning on a yearly basis to film on the estate.

The rural setting accommodates a host of outdoor activities, including fly-fishing, golf, horseback riding, and hawk flying overseen by Ireland’s first school of falconry. The hotel’s historical details and sprawling grounds make it a romantic getaway for couples, who can relax in the treatment rooms or dine in their choice of restaurants including the elegant George V Restaurant (gentlemen require a jacket and tie) or the traditional thatched cottage that houses the restaurant, Cullen’s at the Cottage.
